Respect in martial arts is seemingly inherent. Why is it so difficult to understand that discipline and respect are essential components to understanding any martial system? We could liken it back to being a product of your environment or any other cliche expression thrown about, but success comes from mindset and focus. You achieve that through discipline and respect. In our case, on the mat.

Your actions in Krav Maga, Muay Thai Kickboxing, MMA, Kali Silat and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu speak volumes as to what type of person you are. Do you talk while the instructor does? Do you laugh and make jokes while your partner is intently listening and trying to follow along? This is most likely ruining your partner’s experience and not letting any information sink in. Your experience is their’s. Understand that many people actually want to learn! This isn’t to say that we need you to be “laser beam of death” focused, but simply focused on what is being taught.

Be a good partner which in turn means being a good student. The learning process is the journey. It should be filled with bumps and hick-ups. It will be filled with frustration and fulfillment! Just stay focused and listen intently.
