Recently I was discussing martial arts retention with a friend. He trains in Muay Thai and Krav Maga. Back in the 90’s he did a lot of MMA. Many injuries and a few masters degrees later his understanding of physiology and psychology changed.
There are many levels of retention.
- Lecture 5%
- Reading 10%
- Audio Visual 20%
- Demonstration 30%
- Discussion Group 50%
- Practice By Doing 75%
- Teaching Others 90%
In martial arts, it is key to practice, practice, practice! But we must all practice in the right way. We must be disciplined with technique. Speed and power will come with proper technique (checking your ego at the door is the first step).
Elite Training Center’s approach to technique lends so much to retention. By devoting hours to technique Elite’s students are able to imprint a solid foundation which establishes clearer path ways from body to brain and brain to body. Sometimes this is referred to as muscle memory. In all of the martial arts trained at Elite, Muay Thai establishes so many relevant attributes to being successful in Krav Maga, MMA, and Kali Silat.
