Metamoris 3 took place this weekend in Los Angeles, and for those who don’t know it is a pay per view jiu jitsu tournament. Abandoning the more sport-oriented format of jiu jitsu that was based on points in favor of a 20 minute submission-only match, Metamoris 3 proved to be very exciting and hopefully it is an indication of where jiu jitsu as a spectator driven event is headed.
Many notable jiu jitsu stylists competed this weekend from up and coming stars like Keenan Cornelius to older veterans like Dean Lister. And of course there was the rematch a decade in the making between Royler Gracie and Eddie Bravo that was an exciting bout and may have surprised some people. Kevin Casey of Black House also stepped out of the crowd to replace an injured competitor with 20 minutes notice and put on a memorable performance. The matches were excellent and so were the different stories and narratives all ending in that one exciting rematch between Eddie Bravo and Royler Gracie.
Make no mistake, this (Metamoris 3) wasn’t your run of the mill poorly executed tournament. This was a fan friendly well produced and intelligently commentated series of high profile matches with some of the best jiu jitsu has to offer. No spoiler alerts here, you’re going to have to watch for yourself but hopefully this points to a future where jiu jitsu is more mainstream so that these awesome athletes can make a better living competing.
