martial arts in redondo beach: Leadership

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”  Isaiah 6:8

While I am not a very religious man, this particular biblical verse has always held special meaning to me.  One aspect of this passage that has always captured my admiration is the inherent display leadership.  Leadership is a term that we often hear tossed around or associated with a particular person.  We refer to our elected officials, teachers, coaches and clergy as leaders.  Some say that leaders are born, while others argue that leaders are made.  But what is it that makes a person truly a leader?  What are the characteristics, the qualities that define leadership?  Can anybody be a leader?

A leader is not always the one in charge, but they set the example for others to follow.  A leader does the right thing, simply because it is the right thing to do.  A leader leads by word and deed, even when nobody will hear or see them.  A leader takes the initiative, but never seeks recognition for their accomplishments.  A leader never belittles those in their midst, they attempt to inspire those who struggle.  A leader always shows respect, to all they encounter.  A leader acknowledges their weaknesses and demonstrates the strength needed to improve them.  A leader is not afraid to make a mistake; they openly admit those mistakes and take responsibility for their failures.  A leader is humble.  A leader is patient.  A leader is a quiet professional.  Above all, a leader must have honor, discipline, courage, and integrity.

So why all the philosophical thought?  A few days ago I was talking to a good friend of mine. We were discussing Elite Training Center and all the classes, seminars and camps that we offer our students.  We talked about the different community outreach efforts that we, as a school, have participated in.  My friend was a bit astounded and responded by saying, “I’ve never heard of a martial arts school doing all that.  What are you guys trying to accomplish?”  I responded by saying the goal is not to build the best martial artists in our area.  The goal is to help our students develop into confident, self reliant individuals, to show each and every one of them that they can make a difference.  Whether that difference is in their own homes, in their community, or simply in another person’s life.  In a word……we want them to be LEADERS, all of them.
