Training with Character
We’re all guilty of being too focused on our own training at the expense of our partners. It is hard not to when training in the Martial Arts in Redondo Beach or Elite Training Center’s Krav Maga, Kali, Muay Thai kickboxing, MMA, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or fitness classes. The gym is nice, the instruction is great, and the fresh ocean air is invigorating. When everything feels right, it is maddening when your partner doesn’t reciprocate the same positive energy. A selfish attitude has no place in the Martial Arts in Redondo Beach.
Being selfish violates the principles of respect, honor, discipline, and strength that Elite Training Center aims to instill in all of its students. It is disrespectful because it demands that our partners meet our personal training requirements. It can also shows lack of discipline because it attempts to control our partners rather than ourselves. Selfishness is a sign of weakness because, like a child, it springs from our inability to get what we want. And, like we often remind our children, treat others as you want to be treated.
Train with others as you want them to train with you. We should respectfully praise our partners for what they do correctly and gently and humbly correct them only when appropriate – always being open ourselves to correction. We should honorably accept that we, too, were once, and might still be, novices – in the scheme of things, most of us still are. We should discipline ourselves to worry first about being a good partner; not only will we get our reps, our training will improve.
We should all be strong enough to overcome our selfish ends. The gym will still be nice, the instruction will remain top notch, and the fresh ocean air won’t fail to energize us. In the end, we will enjoy our training in Martial Arts in Redondo Beach more anyway if we do it selflessly.
