Filipino Kali
Those of you who regularly attend Filipino Kali classes at Elite Training Center may have noticed a few changes over the last couple of months. Changes to the class format, changes to how new material is presented and changes in how we conduct our training drills. These changes are just a small part of the many exciting changes that are coming to Elite Training Center’s Filipino Kali program in the next year. Guru Barbara and I have undertaken the daunting task of restructuring how students at Elite Training Center learn and practice Filipino Kali.
Our first goal was to define what essential skills and abilities Guru Barbara will require her Filipino Kali students to become proficient in. Next we attempted to simplify the various Filipino Kali systems by identifying those techniques that had the highest probability of success in a combative scenario. The last step was to design a curriculum that presents those essential techniques in a format that provides the student with the greatest opportunity to learn, practice and eventually master. Given the diversity and richness of Filipino Kali, this has not been the easiest of tasks.
On the personal side, while at times overwhelming, the effort to redesign Elite Training Center’s Filipino Kali program has been incredibly rewarding for me as an instructor. I have developed a greater understanding and appreciation for the art, greatly improved my ability to present information to students and aided a good friend and teacher in achieving her own personal goals. Additionally, I feel that am truly part of, and contributing to, something that will continue for many years after I am gone. To say that I am deeply grateful for this opportunity would be a gross understatement.
So what other changes can you expect to see in Elite Training Center’s Filipino Kali program? Well, we will be bringing the Filipino Kali program in line with the other programs that Elite Training Center offers our students. You will see easy to understand lessons that cover essential techniques; you will have the opportunity to actually see your own development and progression in Filipino Kali though regular promotions and belt testing; and you will eventually be able to earn your Black Belt in Filipino Kali under Guru Barbara Dalla Riva. We believe that these changes will not only enhance our students’ success in Filipino Kali but also develop a greater appreciation of the art.
To all the students of Elite Training Center I offer you this invitation to come and experience what an amazing art Filipino Kali is. If you regularly attend Filipino Kali at Elite Training Center, get ready to really develop your skills as a practitioner of the art. I hope to see each of you on the mat.
