Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu The Mount Part 1

Part 1 – The Mount For Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

During a ground fight, the number one objective position to reach is the mounted position/back mount position. One good reason is from here you can hit your opponent effectively and he can’t do so to you. From the mounted position the basic strategy is to wear down the opponent by using your body weight and maintaining the position using your base. Moreover, it is not always the wisest choice to hit your opponent with closed fist to the face right when you reach this mount because the opponent will use a lot of energy to escape. Furthermore, punching with a closed fist is a good way to break your own hand on the top the opponent’s head. Better options are to use open slaps, open hand palm strikes or elbow strikes: the elbow being the most effective.

Other elements to understand about the mounted position:

• From the front mount, always try to make the opponent turn to his belly to work a choke from the back mount.

• When attempting a submission hold, remember that holding a position is always better than losing the position if the opponent is starting to effectively escape i.e. going to an armlock and missing it only to end up in a poor position. Better to stay of the top position and look from better choices in finishing holds.

• Relax, stay loose, and have good base.

• In real fights, a chokehold is always better than an armlock to finish.

• Always use closed fists to the ribs when attempting to improve your mounted position.

• When using effective head butts, it is better to turn your face to the side and use the side of your forehead to strike with. Using the front of your forehead is a good way to break your own nose or hurt your eyes.

Before you can reach the mounted position after a takedown, it is common to be in the cross body position.  The cross body position is a higher effective position to have in the top position. A skilled Jiu-Jitsu stylist can finish a fight from here using effective submission holds, traps, strikes and/or by working to a position called the knee in the chest or belly. To reach the mounted position from the cross body position the basic techniques taught in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are:

1. Keep your body weight centered, chest- to-chest with opponent. Too many people believe it is important to use hands to block certain escapes. This is not always the case. Keep heavy off your knees and relax your weight. Keep the opponent’s back flat on the ground also.

2. Be mindful of knee strikes to your face, biting and eye pokes; these techniques are highly effective from the bottom position.

3. Use the knee across the belly mounted technique to mount; it is effective and simple.
