For the past two and a half years, I have been teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Elite Training Center. The training has been organizing the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program to focus on Self-Defense, Combatives, and Sportive aspects of the art. The only equipment has been the jiu-jitsu uniform or the gi. Several classes in the basic and advanced curriculum involved using boxing gloves to defend against strikes. Some of the students have competed in jiu-jitsu competitions, and others have simply started down the path toward mastery of the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu receiving many daily benefits in health, fitness, and mindset.
Recently I talked to one of my private students that is a doctor. And he told me that his whole life he has had great ideas to do major projects and often they were not able to be applied in the works place. Dr. Miller, age 60 something ;-), stated to me that he was not able to leverage his ideas and position them correctly for them to succeed. Moreover, he loves the principle in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu of superior positioning before submission. When he expresses this one concept at the hospital to help his fellow staff members, they think he is a genius and so smart! He tells them, “You are not in the right position to request this or that!” Dr. Miller and I laugh because I told him, “See, I am helping you in your career!” It is jiu-jitsu off the mats, Doc!
The past two years have happened so fast. I often speak to people wanting to start training martial arts or those that wish to get back into it! With Martial Arts training, it is better to know something than to know nothing. And my feeling is that if one starts learning something he enjoys, a major factor is to drive towards mastery. The steps towards mastery will give anyone better purpose and self-direction. All three things give true motivation!
