Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu New Purple and Brown Belts at Elite Training Center

One of my students was promoted to blue belt on September 20th several years before at Rodrigo Mederios’ academy in San Diego called PB Fight Center, and on September 20th this same student was promoted to Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu the promoting from Blue Belt to Purple is something that does not happen easy or everyday. Much like this rare experience on the dates of September 20th above: It is a special moment and important step in the journey of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to reach- Purple Belt Faixa Roxa!

The purple belt in Jiu-Jitsu from Brazil is the 3rd adult belt in the ranking system.  Before this the white belt starts off the learning experience.  Next, the blue belt showcases that there is an understanding and application of the basic techniques and strategies against resistance.  Therefore, a person can say that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a performance-based Martial Arts.  I often tell my students that the blue belt without thinking of competition spends time putting techniques and strategies together.

The learning of how to do the choke and the armlock together is practiced so smooth transitions can be made if needed.  From there I like to say the blue belts are students that want to learn and know ALL the secret tricks of jiu-jitsu— the golden leaf techniques — such as a submission with the opponent’s lapel wrapped around his or her arm and neck.  Yet the underlining thought in my words is that overtime those golden leaf moves they will forget because the basics are what will be used moving towards the black belt in the time and years to come.

The Purple Belt in my little narrative has developed game plans of attack and defense.  Often you see these students trying to perform the same strategy on every training partner.  I like to say that these years in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from the bottom position is a time of practicing sweeps and turning the fight.  The truth is a solid purple belt that is knowledgeable knows as many moves as a brown or black belt, but the purple belt doesn’t have the mat time, timing and feel of the these other belt levels just yet.

And lastly for today, I will give a little insight into the brown belt level.  This student has a well developed A game and B game from all the years of training and working through the purple belt level.  He or she is good at almost everything. Every position you put this student in, he or she knows what to do and can perform well under pressure.  The brown belt is getting really close to the black belt rank and ready to put his or her stamp on the art.

We are all very proud and honor to have you training and learning with us at Elite Training Center. Thank you to all the students and friends that helped the testing as well.  And finally big congratulations to the students are were promoted to the next levels of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu listed below!
