Everyone has questions, so we put together a list of the most common ones. We want you to make the most informed decisions possible, so please don't hesitate to ask us anything about our school, our methods or our instructors.
Which martial art is for me?
There are so many martial arts to pick from, how do you choose? We offer a variety of martial arts including the intuitive self-defense of Krav Maga, the fast-growing Mixed Martial Arts, Muay Thai kickboxing, and more. We try to incorporate all of this together and bind it with a positive and supportive atmosphere.
We encourage you to participate in a variety of classes. All have their advantages in different situations. You really won’t know which ones work for you until you try them, which is why we offer a free trial membership that allows you to participate in almost all of our classes.
I have had no martial art experience? Will this be a problem?
You are no different than the majority of our students. We actually enjoy working with anyone who has a strong desire to learn, even if they have never taken other martial arts. Old habits are hard to break, but we want to help you build new, better ones.
I am over 50. How will I keep up with younger students?
Congratulations on taking the first step. We believe everyone needs self-defense. A number of our students are over 50. You will find that our students, young and old, show respect and kindness towards other students. What’s important is to prepare:
- Spend time stretching before and after class. Flexibility will improve as you train.
- Hydrate… Drink water before the session and after.
- Relax.. You can do this.
One of our 50+ students put it best: “When I entered the room the first time I was filled with self doubts. During the very first session my doubts subsided. I was treated with respect and patience by all, students and instructors. I now try to show that same regard for other new students.”
I am a parent. What are the attitudes and values my child will be taught?
At Elite Training Center, we take our responsibility of role model seriously. Your child will learn the principals of kindness, discipline, respect and strength as they train. And our instructors ensure each student maintains their dignity and self worth whenever they are faced with a new challenge in class. The goal is to help them carry these over into their everyday life.
What if I have had some martial art experience or if I’m currently hopping from school to school?
Elite Training Center welcomes experienced martial artists and respects all martial arts and teachers. If you are not satisfied with your style, we encourage you to try out a few classes. You will know within a few sessions if our school is for you. Either way, we encourage everyone to have a “home”.
My friend is in this and they are in great shape and I am not. I’ve heard it is a very intense workout. Will I make it?
“If you come to class, you have succeeded.” There is no weeding-out process. Very few of our students enter the school in the shape they want to be in. We encourage everyone participate at his or her own level. Your strength and endurance will naturally improve as you continue to train. If you need to step out for any reason during the class, that is fine. We’ll encourage you to continue, but there is no pressure to perform. We want you to be healthy on the inside and the outside.
What should I do to prepare for my first class?
We suggest the following:
- Wear comfortable workout clothes. You will sweat and might get dirty. You will be provided with a uniform shirt as soon as you signup.
- We have locker rooms but many students come dressed in their workout clothes
- Most students train barefoot. You can wear socks if you like.
- Water will be at the center, but we recommend bringing a bottle and hydrating before the session.
- Arrive 15 minutes early to stretch and prepare for class.
- Do not train without eating. But do not eat for an hour before class.
- If you have an injury or specific handicap, let the instructor know before class.
- Be quiet and attentive during class.
- Be friendly and open with others.
- Have fun!
I am in law enforcement and seek martial arts training to protect the public. How will my training differ from those looking for basic self-defense or sport?
Elite Training Center instructors have operational experience. As you are in law enforcement, we recommend you participate in normal training and our special law enforcement sessions. In either type of class, instructors will cover the special considerations when your job is to protect the public.

Elite Training Center (formally LOTAR Self Defense) is located in Redondo Beach, California, in the South Bay of Los Angeles. Elite Training Center is a martial arts school focusing on self-defense and fitness. Students include South Bay residents and those in the L.A. region, male and female, adult and youth, those with no prior self-defense experience and those experienced in martial arts.
