HEALTH & FITNESS TIP: D.I.A.}>DECIDE IN ADVANCE!

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

This week’s tip for health and fitness is timed with the Holiday Season as well…reminding you to D.I.A.}> Decide in Advance.

Simply meaning that it’s best that you should DECIDE IN ADVANCE what you will eat and drink…along with what you won’t eat and drink over the Holiday Season.

It’s easier to enjoy your Holidays in moderation if you D.I.A.

Often times during the Holidays, well meaning family and friends do a very good job of encouraging you to over indulge as part of celebrating the year.

The combination of over indulgence of bad food combinations, along with alcohol and over spending…can cause a lot of stress after Holidays are over.

Too much partying combined with less exercise and physical training is a dangerous combination for your overall health and fitness goals.

Our suggestion is to D.I.A.}>Decide in Advance to have a lot of fun and enjoy the Holiday Season without falling prey to over indulgence.

Habits of Excellence}>Living with Gratitude!

Thanksgiving is here…a great time to remind everyone of the importance of Living with Gratitude.

Any great achiever and certainly true Martial Arts Champions, live with gratitude everyday. It’s not just a once a year expression or celebration, it’s a daily habit.

When you live with gratitude and consistently express it to the people that love and support you, as well as the universe we all live in, you’re likely to attract more of the things you are most grateful for.

There are so many things to be grateful for in life.

Whether it’s the love of a family member, a great friendship, a caring mentor, good health or some of the many things we could easily take for granted.

We all live in a country filled with abundance and that isn’t always case in other areas of the world. We live a life of freedom and choice.

Again, not always the case in other parts of the world.

We enjoy clean water, electricity, good food and a beautiful dojo to train in.We are surrounded everyday in class by great people, caring people, helpful people, that are all here to help us grow and achieve our best… in the dojo and in life.

How did we get so lucky?

I hope you enjoy your Holiday Season and that you’ll make Living with Gratitude one of your HABITS OF EXCELLENCE.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU AND YOURS!

7 Disciplines for High Performance

There are seven disciplines you must develop if you want to achieve all that is possible for you. You can learn these disciplines through practice and repetition until they become automatic.

Goal Setting
Every morning, take three to five minutes to write out your top goals in the present tense. Get a spiral notebook for this purpose. By writing out your ten goals at the beginning of each day, you will program them deep into your subconscious mind.

This daily goal writing will activate your mental powers. It will stimulate your mind and make you more alert. Throughout the day, you will see opportunities and possibilities to move more rapidly toward your goals.

Planning and Organizing
Take a few minutes, preferably the night before, to plan out every activity of the coming day. Always work from a list. Always think on paper. This is one of the most powerful and important disciplines of all for high performance.

Priority Setting
The essence of all time management, personal management, and life management is contained in your ability to set the proper priorities on the use of your time. This is essential for high performance.

Concentration on your Highest-Value Activities
Your ability to work single-mindedly on your most important task will contribute as much to your success as any other discipline you can develop.

Exercise and Proper Nutrition
Your health is more important than anything else. By disciplining yourself to exercise regularly and to eat carefully, you will promote the highest possible levels of health and fitness throughout your life.

Learning and Growth
Your mind is like a muscle. If you don’t use it, you lose it. Continuous learning is the minimum requirement for success in any field.

Time for Important People in your Life
Relationships are everything. Be sure that in climbing the ladder of success, you do not find it leaning against the wrong building. Build time for your relationships into every day, no matter how busy you get.

Action Exercise
These seven disciplines will ensure that you perform at the highest level and get the greatest satisfaction and results from everything you do. Study these seven disciplines and then make a plan for how you can incorporate each of them into your daily life.

To Be Fast Go Slow

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

There is a great article in black belt magazine that proves what we teach in the school about going slow to learn a technique.  This is appropriate whether you are practicing mixed Martial arts (MMA), Krav Maga, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Kick Boxing, or any other martial art.

First execute slowly until you have the technique down pat.

When a new student is concerned about blasting through a technique as fast as possible we always advise them

”you will learn this sooner or later but the sooner you learn this the faster you will progress.. execute slowly to obtain perfect form.  then learn about speed.”

Blackbelt finds: “The more time you take to contemplate a physical task before you perform it, the more accurate you’ll be.  However that holds true only for novices and/nor new tasks”

Blackbelt highlighted studies on the speed accuracy tradeoffs performed on golfers.  When a new golfer was given 30 seconds to line up the shot they performed significantly better than when rushed.   But when pros were given the extra time it caused their game to degrade.

What seems to have gotten in the way was information cost.  Novices spent the time and improved.  Experts, for whom the reaction was already learned got significantly worse when forced to think for all that time.  hey over thought the problem.

They also found that is the experts were forced to solve a math problem in their head during the setup time they again performed well.

“So the next time you feel yurself  start to choke assign yourself a mental task.  Then go back to what you trained long an slow to do fast.”
